吃土 is literally translated as ‘eating soil’. It is
often used by young people to describe they are
destitute after purchasing expensive things. They are
so poor that they can only afford dirt for meals.
chī tǔ is a common term in China for being so poor you could only afford dirt for meals.
This is typically said because one has spent all of their money shopping.
